Fashion: La Mode

“The Parisienne is not in fashion, she is fashion.”

—ARSÈNE HOUSSAYE

Fashion is a way of life in France. Period. With many of the earliest design houses originating in Paris, la mode has always been a fixture in French history. Linguistically, think of its influence on the English language: mode, style, couture, and chic all come from français. Even the most American of fashions, denim, got its name from the city of Nîmes (de Nîmes). The biggest irony of the culture, however, is that being à la mode really has very little to do with being “in fashion.”

Whereas some cultures obsess over what’s “on trend” and adopting the latest “it” craze, the French have an innate style they embrace. The standard Française is building an investment wardrobe. Rather than having dozens of mediocre pieces, she has a dozen cherished items she thoughtfully purchased. Her wardrobe is a true reflection of herself.

There is no use trying to “emulate” the French style; it is more about an approach to clothing. Wear what you love and love what you wear. More importantly, love yourself in it. The sexiness of self-confidence with a sprinkling of charm and élégance is how you will channel your inner Parisienne.
